HYDRASPECMA PARTNERS WITH AEROWASH IN REVOLUTIONIZING THE MARKET WITH A WASHING ROBOT

Nordic Aerowash is a company ready to meet increasing market demand. As one of the very few manufacturers of automated aircraft washing robots, Aerowash finds itself in an exciting position with the growing market demand. Since 2017, HydraSpecma has been a key partner for hydraulics and hydraulic components.

UNIQUE MARKET POSITION

All aircraft need regular external cleaning to ensure economic and sustainable operation. The cleaning process is usually done manually, consuming large amounts of water and chemicals, and often creating a physically demanding work environment. This was something that brothers Niklas and Joakim Adler wanted to change. In 2013, they founded Aerowash with the goal of revolutionizing the industry.

In 2016, the first washing robot was launched the following year, the parent company Aerowash AB was listed on the Aktietorget stock exchange. At this point, the company increased its focus on technology development. This focus further sharpened when the pandemic severely affected the market and made it difficult to enter new markets. Fredrik Jonsson was hired as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) and site manager at Aerowash's location in Gävle.

   – At that time, being able to center all our resources on development was very positive. It allowed us to work in a focused and efficient manner to optimize critical functions and develop new ones. When the market finally reopened, we were in a good position with important competitive advantages, says Fredrik.

SUSTAINABILITY AND EFFICIENCY
Two of the most important factors airlines face in efforts to improve efficiency and profitability are sustainability and time. These are precisely the two competitive advantages that Aerowash offers.

Using a washing robot allows an aircraft to be cleaned in significantly less time and with fewer personnel. In addition, Aerowash's washing robot is programmed to clean evenly and thoroughly across the entire aircraft body. For airlines and passengers, this is important because the plane's appearance affects customer value — a clean aircraft is simply more appealing to board.

The environmental benefits of aircraft washing are also significant: a clean aircraft consumes much less fuel. In addition to traditional washing using water, Aerowash's robot can clean the aircraft using a method called dry washing. With dry washing, the aircraft is cleaned using a specially developed, environmentally friendly cleaning agent. This method has major advantages in countries with water shortages and it also prevents harmful waste from seeping into the ground.

Another benefit of dry washing is that the robot can be moved to where the aircraft is parked, rather than moving the aircraft; this simplifies the process and saves a lot of time.

   – The advantages of using the washing robot are clear, and the interest is high. More and more companies are realizing that it is an investment that pays off relatively quickly, so that gives us good signals and energy for further development. Many in the industry believe our solution will become the de facto industry standard within a few years, says Fredrik.

We have good communication with HydraSpecma and receive clear information about deliveries and quick responses to questions. Problems will inevitably arise, but when they do, I know we will solve them together. I am optimistic about Aerowash’s future, and I believe our collaboration with HydraSpecma will continue to grow.”

HYDRASPECMA'S ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT
The partnership with HydraSpecma started in 2017. The washing robot includes many hydraulic functions, and Aerowash receives help from HydraSpecma in choosing the right components. In the early years, HydraSpecma also assisted with assembly. This allowed HydraSpecma's service technicians to gain deep insight into how the washing robot worked, enabling them to contribute more effectively with hydraulic expertise to optimize functions and simplify assembly.

   – By helping with the assembly, we were able to determine what we could do in advance to simplify the installation as much as possible. This resulted, among other things, in ready-made valve packages and structures developed for Aerowash. Another time saver is that the pumps are set up at our site in Örnsköldsvik and delivered pre-configured to Aerowash. Additionally, early on, most of the hoses were replaced with pipes that are mass-produced for Aerowash to save space and improve quality and availability, explains Niclas Öberg, MRO Service Engineer at HydraSpecma.

Today, HydraSpecma delivers most of the hydraulic components, including pipes, pumps, valves, cylinders, motors, hoses, and connection components. In addition, the company provides support with its hydraulic expertise.

   – The ability to consult with hydraulic experts is valuable for us. Thanks to HydraSpecma, we have been able to improve individual hydraulic functions, making them more efficient and simplifying maintenance, which helps us save time, says Fredrik.

STRONG PARTNERSHIP FOR FUTURE GROWTH
Today, Aerowash has sales partners in the largest aviation markets—USA, China, and the Middle East. Together with the sales partners, Aerowash conducts demonstrations for potential customers and participates in trade shows around the world. As a result, Aerowash has been able to increase both its turnover and profit during 2024. The goal for the coming years is to continue growing in existing markets and to expand into new ones.

Further development of the washing robot is a crucial piece of the growth puzzle and an ongoing effort. New features are continuously being added and existing features improved in order to simplify the washing process as much as possible.

HydraSpecma is part of this growth journey. Aerowash plans to bring in assembly assistance from HydraSpecma again to find areas for further optimization and to train newly hired staff. At the same time, hydraulic technicians from HydraSpecma will review selected functions to optimize and reduce system losses.

   – I think the collaboration with HydraSpecma works perfectly and provides security for us. It gives us expertise in hydraulics while also helping us to develop our internal skills. We are working towards the same goal of optimizing the washing robot, explains Fredrik.

Fredrik emphasizes that it's easy to be a supplier during good times; it’s when problems arise that it becomes clear just how smooth the collaboration works.

   – We have good communication with HydraSpecma and receive clear information about deliveries and quick responses to questions. Problems will inevitably arise, but when they do, I know we will solve them together. I am optimistic about Aerowash’s future, and I believe our collaboration with HydraSpecma will continue to grow, Fredrik concludes.
